Permanent Residence

National residence

A national residence card may be granted to a third-country national who holds a valid residence permit, temporary settlement permit, or temporary residence card and has lawfully and continuously resided in Hungary for three years.

National Residence Card

A national residence card may be granted to a third-country national who:

  • Holds a residence permit, temporary settlement permit, or temporary residence card, and:
    • Has lawfully and continuously resided in Hungary for at least three years prior to submitting the application.
  • A kérelem benyújtását közvetlenül megelőzően legalább 1 éve eltartott felmenőként családi életközösségben él:
    • Lives with a Hungarian citizen, or
    • With a third-country national holding long-term residence status, or
    • Lives with a third-country national recognized as a refugee.
  • Is the spouse of a Hungarian citizen, a third-country national holding long-term residency rights, or a third-country national recognized as a refugee, if the marriage has lasted at least two years.
  • Was previously a Hungarian citizen or has an ancestor who was a Hungarian citizen.
  • Is the minor child of a third-country national holding long-term residency rights or recognized as a refugee.

Important Condition

In addition to the above criteria, the national residence card can only be issued if the long-term residence is consistent with Hungary’s interests.

Validity period

The document is valid for up to 10 years and can be extended for another 10 years upon request.

Interim residence

A temporary residence card may be granted to a third-country national who holds an EU residence permit certifying long-term resident status under Council Directive 2003/109/EC.

Temporary Residence Card

A temporary residence card may be granted to a third-country national intending to reside in Hungary for one of the following purposes:

  • Employment or entrepreneurial activity (excluding seasonal work).
  • Continuing studies or vocational training.
  • Other justified purposes.

Conditions for Family Members

The applicant’s third-country national family member, as well as a third-country national family member already holding a temporary residence card or a temporary settlement permit, may receive a temporary residence card if:

  • The family relationship already existed in the European Union member state that issued the long-term EU residence permit.

Validity period

The document is valid for up to 5 years and can be extended for another 5 years upon request.

EU residence card

An EU residence card may be granted to a third-country national who has lawfully and continuously resided in Hungary for at least five years prior to submitting their application or holds an EU Blue Card.

EU residence card

An EU residence card may be granted to a third-country national who:

  • Has lawfully and continuously resided in Hungary for at least 5 years prior to submitting the application.
  • Holds an EU Blue Card, and:
    • Has lawfully and continuously resided in Hungary for at least 2 years immediately prior to submitting the application, while holding the EU Blue Card.
    • Has lawfully and continuously resided in EU member states for at least 5 years with an EU Blue Card, or for research or study purposes.

Important Condition

In addition to meeting the above requirements, the EU residence card can only be issued if the long-term residence is consistent with Hungary’s interests.

The document is valid for up to 10 years and can be extended for another 10 years upon request.
