In order to use the national health care services in Hungary, it is necessary to have either social insurance or a private one.
When using the health care system, you will need a so-called social security number (hereinafter: TAJ). You can confirm your ‘TAJ’ number by showing your TAJ card which Hungarian nationals receive at birth, and which needs to be requested for other nationals.
Anyone who does not have a ‘TAJ’ number, however, will be entitled to social security, unemployment or social benefits, and is able to apply for a social security card in any major city/county government office via the application form.
